Unique Icy Winter Projects
January 21, 2014
As the last few leaves fall off by the end of October, we start looking forward to the holiday season and all the festivities. But somewhere at the back of my mind, I think of the months of icy, bitter cold unpleasantness ahead! The thought of waking up way before the sun and cleaning the ice off of my car to start my day is ruthless.
We usually try and plan fun activities with my kids around this time of the year to keep our spirits up. This year though, we got hit by the Polar Vortex and temperatures dipped to -4°F where I live! It was way too cold to go out and perform the usual snow rituals of making a snowman, snow angels or sliding down the slope in our backyard.
After reading some articles online I got inspired and tried my hand at photographing frozen bubbles. I could see specks of opaque white as soon as they left the wand and by the time they reached the ground, they were frozen and cracked like thin brittle glass. I had to cut my experiment short and come back in to get warm, but I was proud to try something new and happy with the results.
I also had my kids make ice decorations or outdoor sun catchers to hang from the tree branches in our front yard. We put glitter, beads and everything from my daughter's sparkly collection in a large jar lid. We doubled a piece of yarn and put it in the lid so that the two loose ends were long and hung out of the lid. We took it outside and filled it with water. Within an hour, the water had frozen into solid ice with all the sparkles in it. The loose ends of the yarn were perfect to tie around a branch. It looked gorgeous on a white cold sunny day and it was something fun and bright to look at from their bedroom window.
If you have a cool and unique winter day project to share, please do so. I would love to try it out with my family to lift my grumpy mood during the cold months!
Thank you and Keep Smiling!
