Reading for Elementary School Kids
July 7, 2013

It is the first week of July and I am working on my last Graduation project for 2013. Whether it is a celebration for an Elementary School graduation or High School or someone celebrating his or her Masters in Biochemistry, the basic feeling of achievement and going on to something different and vast is always there with Graduations.

And now that school is out for the summer, I am going through the pictures of my past year volunteering and participating at my children's school activities. Each one of the events made special memories but I absolutely loved the time I went in to read to the kids in second grade.

One of my friends who is probably the most patient mom and the best children's librarian I've known, helped me find an appropriate book to read aloud. The Book was called "Burger Boy" by Alan Durant.

It was a fun book and brought up a lot of discussion about healthy eating habits and nutrition, while making the kids laugh. To make it more exciting, I wrapped baby carrots really pretty and took them as a treat for the class. You know how they say, "You eat with your eyes first" - so true. I have never seen 7-8 year olds so excited about baby carrots before!

The reading hour was just perfect. I love reading and I love food :-) It was nice to share an hour of my time reading, and sharing thoughts and a yummy healthy snack with the kids that mean so much to my son.

So next time there is an opportunity to read to kids, don't be shy. Pick a book that can be read aloud, has funny pictures, and something that can bring up opinions and discussion. Time flies and children grow up so fast. It is these memories that stay with you forever!

Thank you and Keep Smiling!
