Wedding Traditions from Around the World

When we think "weddings", we have an image in our mind and our traditions have some fun little events associated with wedding ceremonies. Here are a few of some really ummm... different kinds of events that take place around the world. And even though they sound bizarre to some of us, they make perfect sense to some others!
The Tujia race in China believes in converting a wedding into a ceremony of tears. The Bride-to-be cries for one hour every day starting a month before the ceremony. She is then joined by the mother and the grandmother and every other female person in the family as the wedding day nears. This tradition of women crying is considered auspicious.
Cajun weddings make use of the humble broom to get married. In some areas, the couple jump over the broom and are considered Man and Wife. If single siblings are older than the bride or groom, they are expected to dance with the broom to mock their own single status.
In some parts of Germany, dishes are broken by family members the night before the wedding. Guests get their ceramic plates and smash them as the bride and the groom sweep the floor! It signifies the couple working together through hard times.
Some French have a fun prank after the wedding reception. The friends and relatives of the Bride and Groom make lots of noise with banging pots and pans, right outside their bedroom. The serenade is to bring them out and they have to bribe the noisy relatives with more food and champagne for some peace and quiet!
The most surprising tradition however belongs to some places in Scotland. While the rest of the world spends time and money on beautifying the Bride, they splash the girl with the dirtiest of mixtures from even the sewer. She is then tied to a tree and is made to endure the humiliation. This signifies strengthening her inner self and makes her ready for every challenge during her coming years.
