Birthday Parties - Evites or Invites?
April 27, 2012

I remember the days when we had our birthday parties in our backyards and I got handmade little notes with scrawly handwriting inviting me to share ice-cream and cupcakes!

Times have changed and crafty blogs and Pinterest have made things so much more interesting, opening up our world to a million different ideas for anything under the sky! On the other hand, technology has replaced the cards with faster and greener alternatives. Evites are fast replacing Invites (insert super sad face here).

I love to have my kids make their own invites. Here are 2 of the many that they have made in the past.

My daughter loves hearts and rainbows so this was her favorite. She cut out a stack of cheap construction paper into hearts and glued them together and we wrote out all the details. My son loves origami. He re-used printer papers and folded them in various ways, colored them, and wrote the information. So simple and pretty and fun!

Each of the cards has personality, it shows what they love, and most importantly - they created it. And even more important than that - they were busy for a while and gave me enough time to read three chapters of my favorite book over a cup of coffee!

If you are looking for something more sophisticated and clean, print out pictures and information on good card stock, use pop-up stickers to add dimension and use pretty ribbon. Little girls totally fall for anything with ribbons and stickers. And learn from my mistake - do a thorough job of the proof reading before making the prints and adding all the embellishments. Thankfully, most people did not notice my typo in the heading! I guess they were distracted by the pretty bow on the left :)

If you are looking for something even easier and faster, make quarter-fold cards. There are a lot of free templates available online, that you can print. I did the one below from scratch but you can use templates from HP and personalize the invites.

I don't deny - Evites are fast, easy and free. They come with various inbuilt party options, reminders and driving directions to the venue. They are eco-friendly and a good option in this tech-savvy world where everything happens at the touch of a button. But anyone who knows me or has worked with me would know that I would not trade the personalization and sentiments attached to paper invites with the ease of Evites.

Thank you and Keep Smiling!
